2015 Arnold Amateur Strongman World Championships

On March 6th I represented Canada in the 175lb weight class at the Arnold Amateur Strongman World Championships. At the end of the day I was tied for 4th in the World, which is a nice result, but one that has left me completely unsatisfied with my performance. You heard it here first- next year I will be the top Strongman in the world u175.

150lb Circus Dumbbell, 5 reps in 60s, 4th place

600lb Yoke walk, 120ft in 19.99s, 3rd place

287lb Farmers walk, 60ft in 20.62s, 8th place

500lb Deadlift medley, barbell x2 + axle x7 in 60s, 4th place

Two weeks in Europe without a visit to a gym. It was relaxing, but I’m looking forward to getting back to my regular deal.

Dynamic warm-up: 20x jumping jacks, 20x seal jacks, 8x cat camel, 8x yoga push-up, 10x lunges, 10x glute bridge, 8x side to side hip rocking, 10x Cossack squats, 10x body weight squats

DLs: 225×8, 315×5. With straps: 385×3, 445×3, 495×3. Added belt: 535×2 – Not messing around with this wrist issue; strapping for every work set until this improves. 495 felt great and the 535 was fine but a bit awkward; need to pull with a belt more.

Anterior loaded split squats: 115×6, 155×6, 175×6, 195×6, 205×8

Incline bench press: 135×8, 155×3, 185×3, 200×3, 185×8 – Everything felt good here, no issues to report.

Superset: T-bar rows w/fat grips: 2×8 w/pause, DB curl rack run: 4 reps each at 15-50 and 50-15, Hanging leg raises: 2×12

Great workout. Didn’t feel any lack of strength from the time off or “jet lag”, if you believe in that sort of thing.

Dynamic warm-up: 15x jumping jacks, 15x seal jacks; LAX ball for bottoms of feet, calves, glutes and hips; 10x body weight squats, 8x cat camel, 8x yoga push-up, lunge variations, glute bridge x8, side to side hip rocking, Cossack squats x5

DLs: 225×8, 315×6, 365×5, 415×5, 475×5. Added belt and straps: 525×3 – Wasn’t going to use straps today but the 475 killed my wrist, wasn’t worth aggravating further.

Anterior loaded split squats: 135×8, 155×8, 175×8, 185×10

Incline bench press: 135×8, 145×5, 165×5, 190×5, 165×8 – First time barbell bench pressing in as long as I can remember. Really eased back into it. Wrist is an issue, but didn’t fire up my shoulders like it normally does. Going to build this up slowly.

Superset: Bent over rows w/fat grips: 135 3×8 w/pause, Preacher curls 2×8, DB clean and press 2×5; 1 extra bent over row set without fat grips 1×15

Last workout before leaving for vacation tomorrow. Body needs a serious rest; looks like I have 3 competitions coming up in August. If I get a chance to workout in Europe, I’ll definitely post it on here.

Dynamic warm-up – 20x jumping jacks, 20x seal jacks, 10x body weight squats; LAX ball for bottoms of feet; 10x body weight squats, 8x cat camel, 8x yoga push-up, lunge variations, glute bridge x8, side to side hip rocking x8

Squats: 135×8, 225×6, 240×5, 275×5, 315×5. Added belt: 335×2, 365×2. All very, very light. Adductor remains an issue, felt like I was protecting it with every rep. At this point I’ve narrowed my stance considerably to lessen the pain. Feel strong, but need to work this out.

Standing Military Press: 95×8, 125×8, 135×8, 145 3×8

SupersetPull-ups 5×8, Skullcrushers 5×8 & Oly Squats: 225 2×15

Nice little workout, but my body (notably my hand and adductor) are ready for vacation later this week.

Strongman Events Day

Dynamic warm-up: 20x jumping jacks, 20x seal jacks, 10x body weight squats, 8x cat camel, 8x yoga push-up, lunge variations, 10x Cossack squats

1-arm Circus DB – all right-handed – 100×5, 130×2, 145×1, 160 2×1, 140×2

Yoke – 400 2x60ft, 630 2x60ft

Farmer’s walk w/drag medley – Farmers warmup 220 60 ft; 1 run @ farmers 250 and sled ~450, 60ft each

Drag finisher – 400x60ft, 350x60ft

Kept the volume low and tried not to reinjure my left hand. PB on the circus DB. Yoke felt heavy, but runs were fast. 250/hand farmers are very easy but the drag kills me; body weight kills me here.

Dynamic warm-up – 20x jumping jacks, 20x seal jacks, 10x body weight squats; LAX ball for bottoms of feet; 10x body weight squats, 8x cat camel, 8x yoga push-up, lunge variations, 10x Cossack squats

Squats – 135×10, 225×8, 285×4, 305×4, 325×4 – Had to shuter down here. Adductor in serious pain. Had another 2 prescribed sets but it wasn’t worth it. Weight is nice and light, but the pain was quite bad.

Sumo DL – 315×5, 405×5, 495 6×2

Push press – 135×8, 185×5, 225×2, 255×2 – I’ve somehow reinjured my wrist and shuter down here. On the bright side, 255 beltlessx x2 wasn’t tough.

Superset – Bicep curls 2×10, T-bar row 2×10, Hanging leg raises 2×10

This was unquestionably the worst training session I’ve had in a while. Body is feeling really beat up. Thankfully this was a low volume week, so I felt comfortable not pushing things. Really not sure how I reinjured the wrist (log press last weekend maybe?) and I really need to figure out what’s up with my groin. Vacation to Europe is around the corner so I’ll have some time away from the gym; hopefully this helps.

Box jumps – 24″x5, 36″x3, 40″2×2, 42″x1, 44″x1, 46″x1, 48″x2

Speed DLs – 225×5, 315×5. Added belt: 405 @ 8×1 – Wasn’t sure if I was going to go this heavy but was quite happy with the bar speed.

1-arm standing landmine press – 45×8, 70×5, 90 @3×5 – Controlled eccentric with explosive push.

Anterior loaded split squat – 135 3×5 – Trying to get in more split stance work for the sake of my adductors.
